Review Moderation
Approve or reject incoming product reviews and keep your storefront's ratings honest and trustworthy — plus what's still unreliable in the newer v2 review tools.
Go to Reviews in the left navigation. Genuine product reviews build buyer confidence and improve conversion — but not every submitted review belongs on your storefront. This screen puts you in control of what goes live.
How a review reaches you
A signed-in customer submits a review from a product page they've purchased: a star rating (1–5), a title, and review text. One review is allowed per product per order.
Reviews go live immediately, not Pending
New reviews are auto-approved and appear on your storefront the moment they're submitted — they do not wait in a Pending queue for your sign-off first. Moderation here is retroactive: use the Pending/All view to catch a review after the fact and Reject it if it shouldn't stay up, rather than relying on it to hold anything back before it's public.
The moderation queue
Key points
- Switch between four tabs: All, Pending, Approved, and Rejected — so you always know how many reviews are waiting for a decision.
- Each row shows the product thumbnail and name, with a direct link to that product's listing, alongside the star rating and written comment.
- Approve publishes the review on your storefront immediately.
- Reject hides the review from the storefront without deleting it permanently, in case you need to revisit the decision.
- You can change your mind at any time — an approved review can be rejected later, and a rejected one can be approved.
Open a pending review
Switch to the Pending tab to see everything waiting for a decision.
Read the rating and comment
The star rating and written review are shown side by side with the reviewer's name and the product it belongs to.
Approve or reject
Approve to publish it on your storefront right away. Reject to keep it off the storefront without permanently deleting it.
New in the redesigned admin (v2): a different tab set, filters, and bulk tools
If your store is on the newer admin sidebar, this screen looks noticeably different — the tabs, filters, and available actions are not the same as the classic admin described above.
v2 uses a different set of tabs
The classic admin's four tabs — All, Pending, Approved, and Rejected — don't exist on the redesigned (v2) sidebar. Instead, v2 groups reviews by rating and reply status: All, 5★, 4★, 3★, ≤2★ (lowest-rated, flagged as urgent when any exist), Replied, and Flagged. If you're following steps written for the classic tabs on a v2 store, look for these instead.
What else v2 adds
- A KPI strip and rating-distribution panel — average rating, total review count, and a horizontal bar for each star rating (5 down to 1) — read-only.
- A filters bar above the list: search by reviewer or content, filter by sentiment (positive/neutral/negative), filter by status, and a Has reply toggle — plus a Clear filters button once any filter is active.
- Bulk select — a checkbox column — brings up a bulk action bar: Approve all, Hide all, Mark featured, and Delete.
- A per-review "Mark as featured" action and a Reply action, both separate from Approve/Reject.
Bulk actions, Feature, and the rating/reply tabs don't work yet — this isn't a reliability issue, they're not wired up
Approving and rejecting a review works exactly as described above, on both the classic and redesigned admin — that part is solid. Everything else v2 adds to this screen is visual only right now:
- The 5★ / 4★ / 3★ / ≤2★ / Replied / Flagged tabs don't actually filter anything — the rating and "has reply" values they send are silently ignored by the backend, and the Flagged tab asks for a status value that doesn't exist on a review, so it returns an error instead of a filtered list. Only the plain status filter (Pending/Approved/Rejected) reaches the backend for real.
- The bulk action bar (Approve all / Hide all / Mark featured / Delete) has no backend behind it at all — there's no bulk endpoint, no hide endpoint, no delete endpoint. Clicking any of these fails every time; it is not intermittent.
- The per-review "Mark as featured" action calls a
/featuredendpoint that doesn't exist either, so it also fails every time and no review will actually carry a featured badge.
Until these ship, do your moderation from All, using Approve/Reject on individual reviews — that's the only path that reliably changes anything today.
Responding as your store
Replying doesn't work yet, on either admin
The classic (v1) admin has no reply control at all — only Approve/Reject exist there. The redesigned (v2) admin does show a Reply button and a reply drawer, but saving a reply calls a backend endpoint that doesn't exist yet, so every reply attempt fails and nothing is ever posted or shown to shoppers. There's currently no way to respond to a review as your store from either admin.
Average rating calculation
The rating shown on a product card and its detail page is the average of every approved review's star rating, together with the total review count. Rejected reviews are excluded from the calculation — only what's currently approved counts toward the number shoppers see.
Display on the storefront
Approved reviews appear on the product detail page with a rating summary, the review list itself, a filter by star rating, and sort options (newest first, most helpful). See Browsing Products & Search for how this looks from a shopper's side.
Don't chase a perfect score
Stores that display a healthy mix of honest reviews — including the occasional 3-star alongside the 5-stars — typically convert better than stores with suspiciously uniform ratings. Moderation is about removing the genuinely harmful, not manufacturing perfection.
